Changes due in April 2012 - The Care Quality Commission

From 1 April 2012, all GP practices in England will be required to have registered with the Care Quality Commission. Under forthcoming guidelines and standards set out by the CQC, these GP practices will be required to demonstrate compliance with key standards, including cleaning and maintenance issues at their practices. The recognised standard for cleaning in GP and Dental Practices has recently been revised by the National Patient Safety Agency (N.P.S.A), and both of these will ensure that the essential standards of quality and safety are met.

The Care Quality Commission and cleaning - how will this change things?

Finding a good cleaning company is always a challenge. Now with the impending changes by the Care Quality Commission, this will mean that surgeries (no matter how small they may be) will have to ensure that their cleaning provider can deliver and satisfy the standards and requirements that are being put in place. This will mean that audits and paperwork will increase for both cleaning companies and GP surgeries. Cleaning chemicals will constantly need to be reviewed, to check whether safer and greener alternatives have become available. Machines used in surgery premises for cleaning, such as vacuum cleaners, floor machine scrubbers and so forth, will need to be upgraded if needs require, and seek to be more environmentally friendly, helping to reduce noise emissions from cleaning.

For the most part, supplying cleaning services and maintaining high standards has always been our objective. However these new and upcoming changes will mean that smaller surgeries who have perhaps employed cleaners directly, may have to look to larger companies to start taking care of their requirements, in order to satisfy the CQC initiatives.
